Canal du Midi - Part 2

We walked down to the Fonserannes Staircase which is famous as a lock staircase that raises or lowers boats more than 20m over a distance of 300m into the Orb Valley. There are 8 lock areas and 9 gates. There are fixed times for going up or down the Canal. The whole process takes quite a while as you can imagine with filling and emptying each lock, then manoervering the boats (maximum of 4 at a time depending on size), through the series of locks.
